Birth Complications
Birth complications are not unusual. Even if a mother and fetus seem to be in perfect health, certain situations can arise during labor and delivery that can not be anticipated. While foreseeability is not always possible, a medical team must be poised to act efficiently and responsibly when birth complications do arise.
Examples of some common birth complications are shoulder dystocia, wherein the baby’s shoulder gets stuck on the mother’s pelvic bone, entanglement in the umbilical cord, and complications due to the baby’s position in the womb.
Birth complications arising from failure to properly date the pregnancy, failure to properly treat prenatal infections, improper prenatal care or medical mistakes during childbirth may be caused by medical negligence. Medical mistakes in handling birth complications can allow permanent brain damage by causing oxygen deprivation, or permanent nerve damage in the neck and arm, such as Erb’s palsy. These include medical mistakes or medical negligence related to difficult forceps or vacuum extraction, difficult or long labor and low or no amniotic fluid.
Medical negligence occurs when a physician or other health care provider fails to do something for you or your child that other reasonably prudent providers would have done under the circumstances.
If you or someone you know has been injured due to a birth complication, you may be entitled to monetary compensation. Please fill out the form below for a free evaluation of your claim by an experienced attorney. There is no cost or obligation for this service.
