Birth Defects
Birth defects occur in approximately eight percent of all children. While many of these birth defects are relatively minor, some can cause lifelong disabilities (cerebral palsy, erb’s palsy, or brain damage) and premature death. In fact, birth defects are the number one cause of death during the first year of life.
There are over 4,000 known birth defects including those of the heart, digestive system, face, spine, limbs, brain, eyes, kidneys, bladder, and chromosomal irregularities. While the causes of most birth defects are unknown, many may be due to heredity or environmental factors such as drug use (legal or illegal) and pollution.
Birth defects can sometimes be prevented. When problems arise during labor, physicians and nurses must respond quickly and appropriately. If they do not, seriously, permanent injuries can occur. When an injury occurs during birth because the medical care providers were negligent, the doctor or hospital may bear legal liability for the child’s birth defect.
If you or someone you know has suffered a birth defect, you may be entitled to monetary compensation. Please fill out the form below for a free evaluation of your claim by an experienced attorney. There is no cost or obligation for this service.
