Nerve Damage
Nerve damage often occurs during childbirth. Most commonly, nerve damage during childbirth is a result of shoulder dystocia. Shoulder dystocia is a delivery complication that arises when a baby’s should becomes ‘stuck’ on the mother’s pelvic bone as it descends through the birth canal. In order to correct this problem, a physician must perform one of many available maneuvers in order to get the shoulder past the pelvis while trying to avoid harm to both mother and child.
Nerve damage is avoided in most cases by proper application of a dislodging technique. There are some cases, however, in which too much traction is applied to the baby’s head in order to dislodge the shoulder, or the baby is otherwise turned or handled in an improper way. These cases can often result in nerve damage to the brachial plexus nerve bundle which is attached to the baby’s neck.
This type of nerve damage may be temporary and mild, or may lead to more serious disorders such as Erb’s palsy. Other medical complications may also result due to general nerve damage. A doctor owes a duty of care to both mother and child in attempting to dislodge a baby experiencing shoulder dystocia during childbirth.
